Memorial Services

• Deceased is a Student, Faculty, Staff, or Alumnus
• Deceased is the spouse or child of a Student, Faculty, or Staff member
• Deceased is a retired Faculty or Staff member
• Deceased is the spouse or child of a retired Faculty or Staff member
• Deceased is a Trustee
• Deceased is a spouse or child of a Trustee

As appropriate, the Events and Chaplaincy Offices will:

• help you select the date and time when the Chapel is available.

There is no rental fee to use the Chapel for a memorial service; however, a technician/Chapel attendant must be secured in order to turn on the lights, and depending on the day and time of the service, there may be a fee for the technician.

If you have a minister you would like to use for the service, you are welcome to invite that person. The Events Office or the Office of the Chaplaincy can provide guidance to your family’s minister, if needed.

• The Chapel seats 750 on 62 pews.
• The Chapel aisle is 98 feet long.
• The Chapel has 1 Prayer Room.
• Stage - There are four (4) tiered hardwood platforms. A piano is located on the 4th tier. These platforms lead up to the choir loft.
• The standard set up is pulpit/lectern centered and 2 chairs stage right. If you would like to deviate from this arrangement, work with the Events Office on your specific needs.

• Parking lot U21 is used for events at the Chapel. This parking area is adjacent to the Intramural Fields, near Gateway Village, and a short walk from the Chapel.
• Overflow parking is available in lot U15, at the Physical Plant Building.
• Guests with limited mobility may load/unload on the square brick patio directly beside the handicapped entrance to the Chapel. After loading/unloading, the vehicle must be moved to lot U21 or U15.
• Funeral home representatives may also access the square brick patio directly beside the handicapped entrance to the Chapel.

• The chapel is equipped with a Baroque tracker-action pipe organ built by Rudolph von Beckerath.
• The chapel is also equipped with a 7’ walnut finish Steinway.
• Neither the organ nor piano can be moved.

Chapel acoustics make it unnecessary to have a microphone in the Chapel. If you desire to use a microphone or have a CD of music played, you need to contact the Events Office so that an AV technician can be secured. You should arrange to meet with the technician ahead of time to discuss music cues, if necessary. If you would like to show a slideshow during the service or reception, or if you would like videography of your service, the Events Office can help to secure a technician. Please note there is a fee for the hiring of a technician to help with any audiovisual needs.

• The florist may load/unload on the square brick patio directly beside the handicapped entrance to the Chapel. After loading/unloading, the vehicle must be moved to lot U21 or U15.
• Decorations may be hung on pews with plastic hooks or ribbon. Tape is not permitted.

• All signage needs to be printed on 13" x 19", laminated, cardstock, paper, etc.
• Signs can be ordered from Printing Services (804) 289-8525.
• Signs must be posted on stakes, or on the seven (7) green sign boards located around campus.
• Signs may only be placed on University of Richmond property.
• Signs should clearly state the date of the memorial service. If they do not, they may be removed prior to the date of your event.
• Signs cannot be placed on stop signs, parking signs, or directional signs.
• Signs cannot be placed in flowerbeds or on trees.
• Signs cannot be placed on any of the brick walls at the entrances to the University of Richmond.
• Sign orders, printing costs, and posting of signs are the client’s responsibility.

There is an emergency phone located in the Chapel, to the right of the stage near the Groom’s Room, x8510. Dial x8911 from the emergency phone if there is an actual emergency.

Receptions are scheduled as separate reservations from memorial services, and all costs associated are at the client’s expense.

There is no rental fee to use the Chapel for a funeral or Memorial Service.

For those University of Richmond families that are interested in cremation, the Columbarium and Memorial Garden may be available. Inurnment and scatterings in the garden are reserved for alumni, students, faculty, staff, trustees, retired faculty and staff, and their immediate family members.
